New Irving Park's Country Park Summer: Two Parks, One Walk

Ask a New Irving Park parent about Country Park and you'll hear about the fishing lessons, the paddle boats, maybe the zipline the Greensboro Science Center runs along the tree line. Ask the same parent about Guilford Courthouse National Military Park next door and the tone shifts. That's the place for school field trips, for the cannon reenactments in March, for out-of-town relatives who like history. Two different outings. Two different mornings.

They can be one outing. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is connected to Country Park by a dedicated bicycle path, and locals already use both stretches for the same jog or ride without a break in the pavement. August is a good time to notice it: this summer's neighborhood calendar has included fishing lessons and concerts, alongside a golf and swim season winding toward Labor Day, all reminders that these parks can be part of one outing rather than two errands.

A Path Between the Parks

Country Park sits on Nathanael Greene Drive as part of the city's Battleground Parks District, which strings together roughly 400 acres of trail, a science center, and one historical site into a single administrative unit. That historical site is Guilford Courthouse, 125 acres a few minutes away on New Garden Road, where the Continental Army fought the British in March 1781. The park opens daily at 8 a.m., weather permitting, and the battlefield is open to walkers and cyclists from dawn to dusk even outside its 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. vehicle hours, according to the National Park Service.

For walkers and cyclists, that connection makes it easy to move from Country Park's recreation areas into the battlefield's historic landscape on the same outing.

One practical note before you go: Country Park's free weekend shuttle, which normally loops seven stops around the park on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from noon to 6 p.m. between May and October, is unavailable for the rest of the 2026 season. If you're planning a visit that depends on the shuttle to cut down the walk, plan to park instead. The main lot at 3905 Nathanael Greene Drive has 55 spaces, first come, first served.

Fishing for Fun's Season Has Ended

Fishing for Fun, the city's free Thursday morning program for ages 5 to 14, ran at Country Park from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays, June 4 through August 6. Its final session was August 6. No registration fanfare, no equipment to buy; kids showed up, learned the basics, and the season ended quietly the way it started.

The Shelter Finally Gets Its Turn

Creative Greensboro's Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park series, known locally as MUSEP, is in its 47th year and has been rotating free Sunday concerts through city parks since June 14. Most of the summer, that means driving somewhere else. Yes! Weekly reported that June 28 sent listeners to LeBauer Park downtown for the Greensboro Concert Band. July 19 put The SongBird Raven and The Nest at Barber Park. August 9 brought West End Mambo to Hester Park for salsa night.

August 23 is the one date this season the series lands at Country Park's own Shelter #4, 3802 Jaycee Park Drive, closing the summer with Africa Unplugged and a world beat set sponsored by UNCG's College of Visual and Performing Arts and School of Music. Concerts run 6 to 8 p.m., admission is free, and food trucks handle dinner. For a neighborhood that spends most of MUSEP season driving to hear music, this is the one Sunday it comes home.

The Private Side of the Loop

The public path is only half of how this stretch of Greensboro fills a summer. Greensboro Country Club sits adjacent to New Irving Park with a Donald Ross-designed 18-hole course, racket courts, and multiple pools, the kind of membership infrastructure that quietly shapes a lot of weekday mornings and Friday evenings in the neighborhood. A short distance southeast, Sherwood Swim & Racquet Club runs Greensboro's only indoor clay tennis courts alongside an Olympic-sized pool, a tennis academy, and a café.

In Homes.com's New Irving Park neighborhood guide, Sherwood Swim & Racquet Club board president Katie Rossabi described it this way: "It's a very warm, family oriented place where everybody knows each other's name." That's the texture that doesn't show up in a parks department calendar. It's the difference between a neighborhood with amenities nearby and a neighborhood where the amenities are part of how people actually know each other.

Walking It Once

You don't need a plan to try the connected loop, just an evening when the weather cooperates. Park at Country Park, take the paved path toward New Garden Road, and you'll cross into the battlefield without a gate or a ticket booth marking the transition. Loop back the same way, or extend it if the light is still good. It's the same walk residents already take for exercise. The only thing missing has been someone saying so out loud.

That's really the point of this whole stretch of August. None of these pieces are new. The path has connected these two parks for years. MUSEP has rotated through the same rough set of city parks for decades. Sherwood and the Country Club have anchored this end of the neighborhood since long before this summer's calendar filled in. What's different right now is that this summer's calendar brings them together over this stretch of August: Fishing for Fun's final session has passed, the Country Park concert is still ahead, and pool season is nearing its end before school schedules take over again. It won't line up quite the same way next August.
